It took many years and many mistakes for me to figure out that conforming to expectation to land the job had a low rate of happiness at work for me. The job I liked best of all was the one I took because I wanted to work in that job in that industry in that company for that boss AND I was totally honest about who I am and how I work.

Conventional wisdom at that time was to answer interview questions in certain ways and I spent so much time honing my perfect interviewing skills to make them want! me! that I too often neglected who I was and what I wanted! And as a woman, I had the "like me! like me!" societal pressure to overcome, too.

So I landed in some jobs I am sure I should not have. I did well but was not happy and felt at odds with the culture.

I've learned to be more honest and it's so much better.

You're so right -- we do a fantastic job especially when we are ourselves.

Maria, I so agree. Much of corporate culture revolves around the happy hour anyway lol.

I suspect that most of what people put up is fairly innocuous, and while it might reveal personal elements of ourselves, like I said, I think that can be a good thing!Julie Pipperthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169574697104642479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13083972.post-88087386150573278002010-03-30T13:53:08.757-05:002010-03-30T13:53:08.757-05:00Great post-I completely agree! Although I do have some pictures on FB of me out and about drinking some beers with friends, I do wonder how employers checking me out will react to that however I am with you when you say "if any of that makes me a bad fit for the job, I'd rather both of us know upfront" - frankly I can't see myself working with people that are that uptight that they don't want to hire me because I'm spending my casual time having a beer with friends.

@MariaEsquivelAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07300796567587350718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13083972.post-92082725759633739942010-03-30T13:48:11.559-05:002010-03-30T13:48:11.559-05:00While I didn't get 'dooced' for my blo...While I didn't get 'dooced' for my blog, a potential employer did find mine and deny me the position - but not before saying my children were beautiful and how much she enjoyed reading about them. But since I curse on my blog and am a bit irreverant at times that seemed to be a problem for the recruiter.

It bothered me at first, but it doesn't now. The voice on my blog is the same one I have in an office as many current/ex-colleagues can attest to. Like you, non of that stops me from doing a fantastic job.

It just stopped me from getting one once.Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10282234681163618090noreply@blogger.com
