Truth: rarely pure and never simple

If you ask Persistence how old she is, she'll tell you she's five. She can't quite bring herself to say six, her sister's age. Is it because her sister holds a claim to that number right now, or is it an inherent talent for hyperbole---knowing exactly where the line is that she shouldn't cross? On Saturday at a party several of us were laughing with a neighbor, my friend's husband, and he was spinning yarns about his upcoming trip to Italy. "You need to learn how to lie, Jack," I said, "You go one step past believable. If you'd said you were biking from Paris to Florence, some of us might have partially believed you. But walking?" And we all laughed harder. "Maybe it's intentional," he told me, "I get in trouble for teasing, so I try to make sure I'm way over the top upfront so nobody even starts to believe me." Someone reminded me that I must be a very good liar because everyone thinks I'm truthful. I am ...

Must be something in the water

Hi there. Hope you are having a nice Sunday. I realize that I ought to find something pretty to play or nice to say, but maybe later. For now, click play. * I am so sick. Someone call House. No, wait, don't. He tortures patients. I'm not that sick. * It must be so freeing in a way to be okay with being an asshole. How is that such an endearing quality? * I am loving this song. * No clue whatsoever why someone put the song to a House montage but whatever. * In fact, after downloading this band's version of Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want and playing back and forth between it and The Smiths, I'm hardpressed to say which I like better. I'm shuffling back to my anti-viral tissues, Kombucha tea, and sofa for a Women's Murder Club marathon. But I'll leave you with The Smiths...and please, please, please let me get well. I ended up canceling a playdate, which meant trapping the children inside the house for the entire day. That's not good. But. I didn't feel so hot. And it's a good thing I acknowledged this because by about 3:30 I had wasted away into uselessness. In other words, I had a big flare-up of the Dread Disease. Had I been out of the house, it would have been bad. I would have been unable to drive, get home, do anything, and I wouldn't have had access to my medication. I probably would have really flipped out my friend, too. Sometimes, this really, really sucks. The worst bit was the pain and the general weakness. I also had one of the numbness flares. That stinks too. No, the worst bit was the kids. The kids who were Way Too Good and I Don't Deserve It and OMFG my kids are so used to me being so sick they have learned to recognize it and have figured ou...
