What December Looks Like Where I live (Today)

High today: mid-70s
High tomorrow: upper 70s
Lows: mid 50s to low 30s (when cold front comes through later this week)

Everyone is all excited about a freeze, but, despite my really poor performance in my meteorology courses (yes! I took them! required for a geography degree!), I'm pretty sure the weather can't be at 32 for ten minutes and create a freeze, as much as some of us might wish it.

So...show me photos, give data...what's December like for you right now?

P.S. This is one of two waterside parks near my house that are my favorites for jogging/walking. Lately I've been at this one most of the time, and the relative warmth and green struck me as funny beside the Christmas tree in the gazebo.

I'll take some pictures later. It snowed last night, but not pretty and fluffy. Cold, crunchy and frozen, with a wind that whips it through you and around your ears.

THIS BLOWS.

70F grumble grumble grumble...

It was 12 degrees out at my house this morning. On the other hand, I've heard rumors that it's going to be in the 50s on Wednesday.

Ah, 70. Thank goodness I have a trip to LA coming so I can get my fix.

Mid 40s, overcast here today. The bad part is that the sun starts to set by 4:30 this time of year. (But summer makes it worthwhile.)

Here in upstate New York, it's currently 13 degrees out. Which means we're losing ground, because it was a whopping 15 when I got up this morning. Bleeaarrgggghhhh.

Today it's 19F and snowing outside. I posted a link to a photo of the view out our back window on Twitter!

Palm trees. Lots of palm trees.

The sun has just come up and the rainclouds from the last few days are clearing to the edges (sort of like an old fashioned man's hairstyle).

At 5.15am, the temperature is a balmy 19 degress (66 Farenheit), although our expected high today is 26 (79) - so fairly sensational.

Oh man. Here it's snow, snow and more snow and temps in the teens/20s F. And supposed to get 6-10 more inches overnight. I DO NOT NEED a snow day tomorrow THX!

it's actually been rather cold, for Louisiana, and I think we've had 3 hard frosts already this year.

Your pictures make me miss my last state's residence, Hawaii. Because I HATE being cold. And it's cold here right now, as in frost in the mornings. Grrrr.

I had a meteorology course, too! It was an "interdisciplinary" math/science course--or math/science for dummies, as I liked to call it!

A picture of Orange County would look pretty similar today. (I don't think I'll have time to go take a picture and post it. I shouldn't even be visiting your blog right now!)

Here... just like where you are, but with a bit less of the sea breeze.

December in Houston sure is fun. And you are right, 10 minutes of <32 degrees does NOT a freeze make (though it can feel mighty darned cold.)

We had gloppy snow and freezing rain over the weekend and so the roads are shite today and soon to be covered with another does of white powder from the snow flurry activity we've had on and off.

Still, all I can think of when I think Houston is humidity, so I will live with winter until May.

On my end of the Gulf (Tallahassee) it looks pretty similar. Feels bitchin cold to me. I've lived in Chicago and St. Louis before, but I couldn't cut it there now.

I'm in West Central Georgia, not too much further north than y'all but much further from the coast so we've been having hard freezes pretty frequently since October. Lately we've been in the 20s at night and get out of the 30s by about lunch time. No leaves on trees, the kudzu is dead, the grass is dead. The only thing that's green are the pines.
We're wading through at least a foot of snow in MI, with more ice and snow expected tonight. I don't really mind it much now, in December. It's March and April that make me wish for photos like yours!

I LOVE winter in Houston. I just got back from a trip to Michigan, it snowed a lot while we were there. So funny to see my little Texas-born boy playing in the snow for five minutes, then it's "Mommy, I'm FREEZING!" and back in the house. About twenty times a day.

I could live in the North again if I had to, but I'm pretty spoiled by our winters here. It's my favorite time of year.

looks beautiful. really.

Looks about the same in Austin. Although this year? We have foliage! Really pretty leaves on trees. Amazing. If you bundle up and pretend it's like 20 degrees cooler, you can pretend it's fall.

Ugh, so jealous! We just came back from vacation in Florida where it was 60's and 70's to our first snowfall on Sunday. And this morning we woke up to more light snow and a whooping 8F on our outdoor thermometer. Taking vacation in early December stinks because you have the whole winter still ahead of you.

Oh, it is so beautiful here. Cold as hell but pretty. The snow storm the other day was big and fluffy and snowman worthy. Then the deep chill came. -18 C this morning. By tomorrow morning it's supposed to be +11 C and raining. Go figure.

A geography degree?! Cool.

It's been in the 40s here, which is freezing as far as I'm concerned. I have no idea how I survived 10 years in the midwest.

Just had a huge cold front blow through. I'm hoping any precipitation is staved off until the boys get here from College Station.

I think your blog is fantastic! I saw your comment on Twitter today about homeopathy and how it helped you. If you're interested in sharing that info on www.EmpowHer.com, it would be so helpful. We're trying to build our "alternative" section of our site so that women can find more options than simply traditional medicine options when they come to our site. Please let me know if you're interested in sharing some info in a post. And, if you write in the health area at all, we have some paid writing positions open.
Warmly,

In defense of vanity...I think

Do you have one of those issues where you argue with yourself? Where you just aren't sure what you actually think because there are so many messages and opinions on the topic around you? I have more than one like this. However, there is one topic that has been struggling to the top of my mind recently: vanity and perceived vanity. Can vanity be a good thing? Vanity has historically been truly reviled. Vanity is number seven of the Seven Deadly Sins. It's the doppleganger of number seven on the Seven Holy Virtues list: humility. There are many moralistic tales of how vanity makes you evil and brings about a spectacular downfall. Consider the lady who bathed in the blood of virgins to maintain her youth. Google Borgia+vanity and find plenty. The Brothers Grimm and Disney got in on the act too. The Disney message seems to be: the truly beautiful don't need to be vain. They are just naturally eye-catchingly gorgeous. And they are all gorgeous. Show me the Reubenesque Princess.

Cancer's Calling Card

Foreword: I'm not a medical person, or any kind of expert. This post shouldn't be taken as God's word carved in stone by Moses. In other words, don't consider it to be any kind of authority or use it to treat, diagnose, or select medications. Do your own research and talk to your doctor, an actual expert, who, you know, went to medical school and stuff. This post is merely my best understanding of cancer and cancer treatment and prevention, as related to our situation, based on what I've learned from reading and talking to doctors. Author's Note: If you aren't interested in the cancer discussion and the things I learned, and only want to know the outcome of our appointment with the oncologist yesterday, skip to the end. I've divvied this up by sections, so go to the last section. What would you do if one day a postcard arrived in the mail to warn you that sometime in the next three years you would be diagnosed with cancer? Would you believe it? Change an

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Quorum

After being confronted with written evidence, Julie admits that she is a total attention whore. In some things, in some ways, sometimes I look outward for validation of my worth and existence. I admit it. It's my weak spot, my vanity spot . If you say I am clever, comment on a post, offer me an award, mention me on your blog, reply to a comment I left on your blog, or in any way flatter me as a writer...I am hopelessly, slavishly devoted to you. I will probably even add you to my blogroll just so everyone can see the list of all the cool kids who actually like me . The girl, she knows she is vain in this regard , but after much vanity discussion and navel-gazing , she has decided to love herself anyway, as she is (ironically) and will keep searching for (1) internal validation and (2) her first person . Until I reach a better point of self-actualization, though, may I just say that this week you people have been better than prozac and chocolate (together, with a side of white choc
